Understanding the loss

Same Vehicle. A Different Resale Value.

Even excellent repairs cannot erase an accident history. Buyers and dealers may pay less for a previously damaged vehicle than for an otherwise comparable vehicle with no accident history. That remaining difference is called inherent diminished value.

The Vehicle Before the Accident

Year, make, model, mileage, condition and prior accident history establish the starting point. Your VIN helps identify the exact vehicle and equipment.

The Damage and Repair History

Structural damage, airbag deployment, the extent of repairs and supporting repair records can influence how future buyers value the vehicle.

What the Market Actually Pays

Comparable sales, dealer valuations and market evidence help support the difference between pre-loss value and the value after proper repairs.

Your right to recovery

A Repair Payment May Not Cover the Whole Loss.

Where state law allows, an owner may be legally entitled to recover diminished value from the at-fault party, typically through that party’s insurance carrier. It is a separate loss from the cost of repairing the vehicle.

Evidence Makes the Difference

A supported valuation, repair documentation and market comparisons help explain the loss. A generic percentage or an unsupported demand may not reflect your vehicle’s actual market.

Eligibility Depends on Your Claim

State law, fault, prior damage, policy terms, deadlines and any signed release affect recovery. Claims against your own insurer may be treated differently and may be excluded. Not every owner qualifies, and payment is not guaranteed.

Real claims. Meaningful recoveries.

A little clarity

Common Questions.

Is diminished value the same as repair cost?

No. Repair costs pay for restoring the vehicle. Diminished value describes the market value it may still lose because of the accident history, even after proper repairs.

Can I claim it after repairs are complete?

Potentially. Completed repair records can help establish the remaining loss. But deadlines and settlement releases can affect your rights, so review the situation before signing a release or waiting to pursue the claim.

How much is my claim worth?

There is no universal payout. The vehicle, damage, repair history, local market and applicable law all matter. A vehicle-specific assessment is more useful than an assumed percentage.
